What we store on your device — and what we deliberately do not

We set no advertising cookies
Most cookie policies are long because the app behind them is doing a lot you would rather it did not. This one is short.
ByeThings sets no advertising cookies and takes part in no advertising network. We do not follow you around other apps or websites, and nobody buys a window into what you look at here.
There is one optional thing, and it is off until you turn it on: product analytics, which records which steps of the app you reach so we can see where it gets in the way. It is described below, it lives behind a switch in Cookie Settings, and everything works exactly the same whether it is on or off.
Everything else we store is a small amount of information on your own device, needed for the app to work at all. It is listed below and you can clear it whenever you like.
Product analytics, if you turn it on
This is off by default. Nothing is recorded, and no analytics provider is contacted at all, unless you switch it on in Cookie Settings — and switching it off again stops it immediately rather than at the next restart.
We will ask you once, after you have used the app enough to have a view, and both answers are offered the same way round. If you say no, or dismiss the question, that is recorded as a no and you will not be asked again. You can change your mind in either direction at any time in Cookie Settings.
When it is on, we record that certain steps happened: a scan finishing or being refused, a paywall being shown or dismissed, a listing being published, a link being shared, a conversation being started. Each carries the step, whether you are on a phone or the web, and counts — how many photographs, how many items.
It is tied to your account id and nothing else. Not your email address, not your name.
It never includes your photographs, your descriptions, the prices you set, your messages or your postcode.
Location is not derived from your address. We ask our analytics provider not to look up where your connection is.
The provider is PostHog, and your data is held in the European Union. It is listed with our other providers in the Privacy Centre.
It exists to answer questions about the app, not about you — where people get stuck, which step loses them. No decision about your account is made from it.
What is stored on your device
The mobile app does not use cookies in the browser sense. It uses your device's local storage, which does the same job without being sent to anyone.
Your sign-in session — so you are not asked for your password every time you open the app. Cleared when you sign out.
How many scans you have used — kept on the device because an in-memory count would reset every time the app restarted, and the free allowance would never mean anything.
A cached copy of your profile — so the app can show your name and plan instantly at launch instead of a blank screen.
If you use ByeThings in a browser
The web version stores the same three things in your browser's local storage rather than in cookies. Clearing your browser data removes them and signs you out.
Strictly necessary storage of this kind does not require consent under the UK Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations, because without it the service you asked for cannot be provided. Anything beyond it does require your consent — which is why the analytics described above is off until you give it, and why it is the only thing on this page with a switch.
Managing it
Cookie Settings, in Profile, lists everything currently held on your device, carries the analytics switch, and lets you clear the lot. Signing out clears your session immediately.
Turning analytics off removes the record of your decision along with everything else it stored, and stops any further recording at once. You do not have to give a reason and nothing about the app changes.
